Blue Mountains / Wentworth Falls

We made a trip to the Blue Mountains and we took over 150 photos...it was very beautiful and peaceful. We hiked for about 10 hours in the 2-days we were there

In & Around Syndey

I try to take the camera with me anytime I leave the house...there are always beautiful sites that I want to shoot and send home to
share with everyone!!

Here are just a few of them...I am sure I will continue to add more as the weeks and months go by.

This is one of the most beautiful trees - it is a Jacaranda tree and I think it is one of my favs so far. I say this, and then everyday I see a new flowering tree.

The birds below are my little rainbow lorikeet friends that I met while housesitting in Watsons' Bay.

Sydney - Hobart Sailing Race

We watched the start of the Sydney-Hobart race from Watson's Bay on Boxing Day (26th December). We joined our friend Rebecca at her home for a barbie and hiked up to the peak in Watson's Bay to ensure we could find her husband's boat (Matt). This was Matt's first Sydney-Hobart race and it was a very exciting event to watch kick-off.

As you can see in the left hand photo, there was quite a bit going on in the water that day when the race began. I don't believe I have ever seen that many boats in one place. There were thousands of people crowding around for this exciting event.

Sydney to Melbourne Drive

We made the drive from Sydney to Melbourne over the Christmas holiday...it was a beautiful and relaxing drive. The total distance is approximately 1100 kilometers (10/11 hour drive). We took our time and stretched it over 8nights/9days. We made a few stops on our journey in coastal towns; country towns; and small villages.
Day One
We stopped in Kiama on our way to Bateman's Bay (our first 2-night stay). Kiama is known for its blow-hole that is known to blow water a few meters high....it wasn't cooperating when we were there but it was a cute little town.
Jervis Bay

Bateman's Bay

*We loved the black swans, first time we have seen a black swan!

Day Two
We went on a Clyde River Cruise on day two. I met Razie and Georgie, they were very excited to meet me because I reminded them of Debra Messing and they were anxious to take a photo together to post on their 'almost famous' wall in Bateman's Bay.

Day Three
After we left Bateman's Bay, we drove along for a while and stopped in at Broulee to talk a walk along the beachside. I wasn't quite awake yet and just working on my morning cup of coffee when a wave came up and stole my cup of coffee, I was able to rescue it from the water but it was a bit gritty with sand after that.

Lakes Entrance

First Spider Encounter (Details included)

Well - we made it through our first "warm" Christmas...I really don't think I could get used to it.
Of course, I know, you are all cursing me right now when I say that but it truly doesn't feel like Christmas when it is 60-70 degrees outside...it feels like a summer holiday (of course I realize this isn't the worst thing in the world). If it makes you feel any better, we were in Melbourne for NY's Eve and it was the hottest NY's Eve day in over a century (42.2 Celsius) - yes, that is a whopping 110 Farenheit....still jealous of the hot weather?

I had my first "Real" spider encounter during our 9-day journey from Sydney to Melbourne. We were about 1/2 way through our trip and we stopped in a little coastal town to check out a few sites...I proceeded to make my way in to the outside public toilet (they are everywhere at least and pretty nice) but outside toilet areas are the prime locations for a few of these lovely creatures.

So I made my way in and I wasn't even 2 steps in to the doorway when I spotted it high up on the wall; just staring at me. It was right next to the sink and there was a young girl standing there washing her hands. Of course I couldn't help that my normal reaction was to go "Holy S*&*" It was just the natural thing to do at that point. Well I startled the girl more than anyone as I pointed just above her. At that point her mom came out and all 3 of us pretty startled by it, but yet everyone else was able to still go in and use the bathroom like it was no big deal :) Not me!

After the girl took her flip-flop off to try and kill it (here, they call them thongs..and think we are crazy for calling them flip flops) she decided very quickly that she just couldn't do it....well, I still had to go to the bathroom. So I came out and told Dale the entire story and of course he told me to quit being a sissy and to go in and use the bathroom. I made him come in and see this lovely spider with his own eyes, just so he knew just how large this spider was...I think it freaked him out a little too but he would never admit it.

So for all of you that are there chuckling at me now, because you know just how scared I am of spiders...I have included a close up photo of this little sweetheart just so you all know how brave I was that I went back in and used the bathroom...knowing that this thing was just outside. Funniest part is that everytime I had to use an outdoor bathroom after that on our trip, I certainly checked all of the walls when I entered.

Funny Aussie stories...

Well, there were a few very funny stories, “Aussie slang”, etc that I forgot to mention in my first e-mail (I know...the first e-mail was quite a long time ago). I was just sitting here at work and I began laughing at some of the things I have experienced here so far -- so, I wanted to share a few with you…

"Aussie Slang"
Flip flops (U.S.) = Thongs (Australia)
Bathing suit (U.S.) = Togs; Costume or Swimmers (Australia)
BBQ (U.S.) = Barbie (Australia)

"Daily Morning Spider Ritual"
I have a morning ritual that I perform. As most of you probably know, I was talking about the giant spiders for about 1-month before I left Chicago. Oh, and that is about as long as I knew I was moving to Sydney….so basically since the moment I found out I was moving here. I began reading books about the city, to get myself excited about this experience of moving ½ way (ok, only 1/3 way) around the world – and of course, all I kept reading about was how many dangerous and poisonous creatures they have here. I think I was the first person to move to this country who could list every poisonous spider and snake the second I landed in Sydney.

So, back to my morning spider ritual – when I first wake up (which continues to be at exactly 6am every morning!) Well it was for the first few months, this has tapered off a bit now – I first take a look around the room and examine every wall…once that is clear, I then get out of bed and check behind the bedroom door. Once I have cleared the bedroom, I move in to the hallway and living room – I always check everywhere in the bathroom before I turn on the shower because so far, that is where most of the spiders are found…at least from the stories I hear.

I think I mentioned in my first e-mail that we finally found a place to call home for a couple years – we are just a few minutes from the water (Rushcutter’s Bay and Rose Bay)
We are in an area called Darling Point…it is very convenient for me to get to work, shopping and the grocery store – these are all really important considering we don’t have a car and don’t plan to have one while we are here. It is really nice, we can walk down to the bay in a few minutes to pick up a cup of coffee, and I am right across from the train line that I take to get to work.

A few strange things about Sydney – they don’t put screens on anything…not on windows, doors, nothing! So all of the little critters that I have been stressing about for a few weeks before I even arrived – yep – well, you might as well just invite them in to have dinner with you

So far, we have found a few baby spiders (so small even I can fight them off); a lizard (just crawling around in the living room); and a few flying cockroaches. Yep, if the poisonous spiders and snakes aren’t bad enough, they have flying cockroaches to top if off! They actually don’t bother me as much, but sometimes they catch you off guard. We were sitting in the living room watching a movie the other night and in came a flying roach…landed right on our living room wall. I asked Dale to kill him and he was like, oh he is fine there for now, I will get him when the movie is over. I said, no lets take care of him now so I don’t have to worry about him flying all over the place or maybe on me!! They honestly wouldn’t be so bad; except they are ginormous and they fly.

When I say ginormous I really mean it – this one was a few inches long!! The biggest I have seen, except during my short visit to Arizona a few years ago. Definitely the largest I have experienced in my home.

We had a week long house-sitting experience for a co-worker of mine in Watson’s Bay a few weeks ago – Watson’s Bay is at the very tip of one of the bay areas outside of the city. It is absolutely beautiful but a bit far away. So I had a bus ride, to a ferry ride each way in and out of work. It gave me time to catch up on a couple of books that I have been meaning to finish….

So on my bus ride each morning, I would experience sitting next to a few children that were on their way to school. There are very few school buses here; most of the children take public transportation along with everyone else…which I think is rather interesting. So a few days during that week, I would be on the bus with the same two little kids, they were obviously friends and they planned their bus ride together in the mornings. The conversations they would have were just hilarious and a bit shocking!! I have noticed that the children here are so proper. One morning, one little guy said to the other, I feel great this morning - I slept better last night than I have in ages. I was laughing so hard inside, I loved it. They sounded like 2 adults having a conversation over their morning coffee / tea.

Sydney Holiday Party

We had a wonderful company holiday party in Sydney - I am with Jo, one of my beautiful Sydney coworkers. The party had a Hollywood theme; we had Marilyn Manroe perform for us; along with a few other exciting surprises throughout the evening.

Our first warm Christmas

Tania - Mandi - Rebecca

Matt - Tania - Dale

We celebrated our first warm Christmas this year in the land down unda! We spent Christmas Day at home relaxing, cooking, and just enjoying time off work. We were invited over to a co-workers house (Tania) on Christmas evening for dinner with our friends Rebecca and Matt. There were about eight of us for dinner, it was wonderful. We had fabulous food and even more wonderful wine with dinner. Dinner consisted of a few very "traditional" items - turkey, stuffing, and sweet potatoes. Then there were a few original and very delicious items - chestnut soup, brandy butter, fresh cranberry sauce for the turkey and mashed parsnips.
